A very well-known verse occurs in this chapter: Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world" (verse 36). This statement raises two interesting questions:

  • If Jesus' kingdom is not of this world but rather is spiritual, how can he at the second advent set up a physical, earthly kingdom?
  • If Jesus' kingdom is not of this world, does this mean that earthly governments are to have nothing to do with Christianity and the church?

Ryle addresses both of these questions. The first has important implications for eschatology, specifically the Millennial Kingdom. However, the second has become absolutely crucial for our day. When the courts of the United States have imposed a historically erroneous intepretation of the First Admendment, nothing could be more relevant than Ryle's comments on John 18:36, written over a century ago.

These are the technical notes by J. C. Ryle that accompany his expository comments on John chapter 18.
