"Jesus answered, 'Verily, verily, I say to you, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.'" John 3:5.

The meaning of this important statement by Jesus is much debated. What did he mean by "water" and "Spirit"? Is he referring to two things, or do both nouns refer to the same thing? Does this verse have anything to do with water baptism?

These are the technical notes by J. C. Ryle that accompany his expository comments on John chapter 3.
