Jesus is still discussing the coming of the Holy Spirit in John 16. What will be His main job when the Holy Spirit comes? "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment" (v. 8). Now that sounds clear enough, right? However, Jesus' explanation seems to raise a whole series of questions.

  • Concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.
  • Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me.
  • Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

The first statement seems pretty straightforward. But what about the other two? Where's the connection indicated by the word "because"? Are these jobs of the Holy Spirit related to His ordinary operations in saving God's people? Read Ryle's enlightening exposition of this difficult passage and find out.

These are the technical notes by J. C. Ryle that accompany his expository comments on John chapter 16.
