Why Read This Book

Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield (November 5, 1851--February 16, 1921) was one of America's greatest theologians and is especially remembered as Professor of Systematic Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church established Princeton Theological Seminary in 1812 with Archibald Alexander as the first Principal and Professor. He was followed in that role by Charles Hodge (tenure 1851-1878), Archibald Alexander Hodge (son of Charles Hodge and named after Archibald Alexander; tenure 1878-1886), and B. B. Warfield (tenure 1886-1921). These three, Charles Hodge, A. A. Hodge, and Warfield. This trilogy formed perhaps the most powerful defense of Calvinistic Presbyterianism. Unfortunately, in 1929 Princeton Theological Seminary reorganized along modernist lines, causing J. Gresham Machen, Oswald T. Allis, Robert Dick Wilson, and Cornelius Van Til to resign and form Westminister Theological Seminary in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

Though Warfield is recognized as a prolific writer and important theologian, he is perhaps remembered most for defense of the inerrancy of the Bible. A number of his published articles on that subject have been compiled by Samuel G. Craig, The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible (Philadelphia: Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Co., 1948 and 1970).

These writings by B. B. Warfield consist of selected topics from the two volumes, Selected Shorter Writings of Benjamin B. Warfield, compiled by John E. Meeter (Nutley, NJ: Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Co., 1970 and 1973).

The first article makes an important point that all ministers should acknowledge and practice in their preaching.

The remaining four articles give all Christians a concise summary of the meaning of these critically important theological topics.
